So, Jord and I got these couches on Craigs list a few months ago and not until we got them home did we realize that we really didn’t like them… it went like this..

Spotted couches on Craigs list. Worked out a deal with really nice guy in Old Greenwich. Rented a Home Depot truck. Sat in traffic for close to 2 hours (destination was only 20 miles away). We get to the guys house, take a closer look at the couches and realize that we don’t really like them anymore, (at that point they were coming with us- it didn’t matter). We slide the vintage, ivory, Lord and Taylor couches (three of them) into the dirty, dusty, filthy Home Depot truck and cringe at what they are going to look like when they get them home. Tarp or a cover sheet would have been a good idea. We drive home, regretting our purchase, but not really saying anything. We unload them from the truck, get help from our neighbor moving them up into our t.v. room, and sit down. The truth becomes apparent. We both mutter, “what were we thinking”.

Determined to make these couches lovable, because they aren’t going anywhere, I decide that they need some new pillows. Anything I bring home to accent (aka hide) the couch, just doesn’t cut it. It’s up to me to make the perfect pillow. My fabric choices the first time around were way off– I thought mixing flannel plaid and cowboy themed patterns would be cool. It wasn’t. Whilst returning cowboy fabrics I spotted some really neat outdoor materials. This was it. I felt it in my bones. This was the answer to my ugly couch. I purchased these nautical-like, outdoor fabrics and pom-poms and put my serger.

I’m actually really happy with the outcome, but I want to know what you think?! Making pillows is SUPER easy and I included some instructional photos in here for you to understand the process a little bit. Our once ugly, once unlikeable couches are now 100% loved.

If you’re bored:
Buy: fabric of choice, pins, stuffing, and, um, a serger or sewing machine- needles and thread for the brave (and extremely bored). (pom-poms optional)
Cut: fabric into pillow sized square with right sides together
Insert: pom-pom strand between two layers so that pom-poms point to the center of the pillow. (optional)
Pin: fabric together along edges with the proper seam allowance
Sew / Serge: all edges of the inside out pillow making sure to leave a good gap open where you will insert your stuffing!
Flip: material / deflated pillow inside out. (viola!)
Stuff: deflated pillow until it is fluffy enough for your needs
Sew: closed the “stuffing area” either by hand or even with fabric glue
