Dad’s birthday cake

It was my Dad’s birthday back on September 6th and seriously… what do you buy a man that has everything and really doesn’t even want gifts (unless it’s like, an antique wooden boat, kayak, some crazy guitar, sailboat or yeah- basically anything water and or music related).. not to mention we bought him everything on that list, with the exception of the antique wooden boat, because he got that for himself… CD’s get old after a while, and buying him the sequel to whatever novel he is reading is just unexciting. Basically, it was time for a new kind of gift.

SO, my mom called me the weekend before my Dad’s birthday dinner and asked if I wanted to be in charge of the cake. The cake? That’s, like, a huge responsibility. I am totally into it, but I knew I was going to have to do something that had never been done before.

Cake… cake? cake! What was I going to do. As one of my birthday gifts, my fave Auntie, Kathy had given me this Amy Sedaris book, I Like You: hospitality under the influence. I always open the book and laugh until I can’t breathe anymore… when I look away, hours have passed and all I have learned is how to make a cake that looks like a band-aid or how to hide coins in people’s food when they come over to dine at your house. Don’t worry, friends, I wouldn’t put something [that small] in your food. Anyways, hilarious book, I love it. So I come across the cake section in the back and BINGO! There is a sailboat cake!

Long story short- I made the cake from scratch, shaped it like a (dual layer with frosting between) sailboat, created some scenery and decorated the cake as though it was going to embark on a sea voyage. It was one of the most interesting projects I’ve done to date and here are some pics to go with my cake-liscious story.

p.s. it was edible and actually tasted good! excuse me while I pat myself on the back 🙂
p.p.s. for some reason, my photos insist on loading backwards… so just know that the batter being made and all that, actually happened first
