it’s the little things

When I was little I would rearrange my room at least 1 to 2 times a month. My mom would walk in and I would have my mattress on my back, contemplating where its new home would be. I got rid of my bed frame because it was too much of a hassle to keep moving it around.

I would always have a room diagram as a helpful guide. My Dad taught me to draw it out before I moved everything into place– this way I could be sure that after my furniture found its new home that there was adequate space for the door to swing open, outlets where I needed them, easy access to closets, and always exposed windows for that special light . My room would morph from one full wall of shelves covered in trolls, to a vast, white empty space full of my parents modern furniture I snagged from the living room. The next week it would resemble an Indian palace, full of color and mood lighting, and then switch to a pink room with blow-up furniture and random things hanging from the ceiling.

I’m not sure what influenced and inspired me as the only magazine I received regularly was delias, and I didn’t do much web surfing back then, but it always made me feel renewed, energized, refreshed and proud.

My need to rearrange and redecorate is still here and stronger than ever. I am always switching things around, replacing pieces, rotating couches, adding swings, moving rugs, etc. If something is in one place too long I feel like it gets stuck- or the energy gets stuck.. or something.. it’s hard to explain.. but I love the feeling of sitting on a couch that’s in a totally new spot– using a part of your room which hasn’t been used yet…

With all of that being said, and my declaration of loving change (in terms of decor), I have found that there are a few little things that always stay the same… These few things seem to have found a special home and they fit perfectly. When everything else moves they put.

A Ganesha  post card from my Aunt Kathy when she was in India… Since she sent this to us (sept 2008) it’s been tucked behind this conduit thingy right next to my door.  It is the last thing I see before I leave my house and the first thing I see when I walk in and put my keys down. (Ganesha is known as Remover of Obstacles and more generally as Lord of Beginnings and Lord of Obstacles).

This sweet, little, red headed angel is also right by my door, tucked into my mirror. My Boss and Friend, Jennifer Paganelli, gave her to me. This little Angel is so sweet and I like to think that she watches over us.

If you’ve been to my home then you’ve definitely seen this… It’s an antique wall hanging from my home growing up, which we’ve turned into a bowl of friend pictures. We try to snap a photo of every person who walks through this door and now our friend picture bowl is overflowing! help!

This is actually a new addition, but I know it will be around for a while. It’s a simple and fun frame I got for $7… I found this sweet postcard at Stratford Antiques and just loved the looks on their faces — it’s so funny. It sits on our bar in the living room and gets a lot of attention.. It’s entitled, “Close Quarters”…
