home sweet home

Ever since Jordan and I decided to take the plunge and become home owners we have learned more than I could ever have imagined even existed… about mortgage and house stuff, that is. From PMI and points to duct seal and sump pumps I feel like an enlightened home owner who in reality actually probably knows nothing in comparison to … well… experienced home owners. Just a minute ago I was elbows deep in my damn sump pump, gagging, trying to get the water to release. Then I realize that the outlet is broken… so after figuring out that the power source was shot, I cursed myself for not starting at the root of the problem as I wiped muck and shit off of my forearms..

So, this leak in our basement turns out to be more of a problem than we originally thought. It’s not a simple exposed pipe leaking water, but rather the 100 year old, crumbling concrete around the pipe is breaking down and allowing water to penetrate… in to our basement… a lot of it. So, they are down there right now patching it up and I’m just not sure that it’s going to do the trick. Plus, where is the water actually coming from and where will it go now? After filling the exposed, uncapped pipes with foam, they are framing around the area of the old concrete and pouring in some yummy, new concrete. Still. I don’t think this is going to do the trick. (BTW, if you’re actually still reading at this point you get a lollipop). I heard about this stuff from my dad, Duct Seal, that is supposed to be a miracle worker when it comes to the prevention of water intrusion & crumbling concrete / cement. I have a feeling that if/when the leak returns we will have to resort to something like duct seal, but I will wait for the cement to dry and re-evaluate. Enjoy some Polyvore! I would include pictures of the water situation, but Polyvore is so much less depressing.
