tweaking a Summer outfit for Autumn

Maybe it’s just me, obsessed with being able to wear the same staple items year round– blouses, skirts, and dresses… even shoes. It’s fun, it’s a challenge, it’s economical, and although you might think it gets boring– it never does… Well, so long as you really know how to mix it up, which is what I’m about to talk to all of you fashionistas about.

I tried to select some of the most summery, dainty, whimsical, pieces in my virtual wardrobe. It doesn’t get more summer than this white Derek Lam, frilly, petticoat-like skirt, and beautiful silk, short sleeve, embellished, somewhat mauve-ish, GILES top.

The process of transforming a summer getup to an Autumn- appropriate ensemble is, in my walk-in closet, the most fun I have (because, of course, this doesn’t count the madwoman, ripping, cutting, sewing, surging party that happens in my office to transform old boring dresses into skirts, long dresses into short ones, long ones into even longer ones, etc. you get the point. So, if I’m in a rush and all that seems to be clean and available in my closet are summer pieces– I am excited and I am a happy camper up for the challenge.

As you can see here, it’s quite simple as long as you’ve got the ingredients! For winter, as I expressed in my love of boots post, I suggest finding one awesome boot that can take you anywhere.. something super comfy, yet sleek and probably more on the fancy side, as it can always be dressed down. Imagine this boot with jeans (over and or under), with skirts, dresses, leggings, tights… everything. If it works- buy it and you will thank me.. well, I hope so at least.

Ok so back to the post… All we basically did here was toss out the most summery of ingredients, which can still be used in other ways during the Fall and Winter. I replaced our stunning, Marni platforms (AHHHH CURRENTLY 50% OFF!), with a more rugged, yet still sleek and stylish pair of black, studded, round toed motorcycle boots by HTC. (vrum vrum).

I swapped the pastel, and oh so pricey (eeek) Benjamin Eyewear Kayne acetate sunglasses for something darker, sexier, and more mysterious, because don’t you want to be mystery girl whilst pumpkin carving, apple picking and sipping mulled cider at the corner cafe this season? Thought so.

We tossed the Anthony David® Evening Bag with Swarovski Crystals to the side and replaced it with something much more cool weather friendly. This baby blue-corn blue, Donna Karan, Modern Aries bag with exposed zippers will fit everything that your cold hands will not want want to carry. I also love that we are keeping the mix of textures here- when we got rid of the fabulous evening bag we replaced it with something just as interesting and textured with the zipper thang.

Other summer accessories, such as the delicate, summery, Marni bracelet (yum) and the lace, translucent neck scarf, were replaced with a pair of OMG fabulous soft, NICOLE FARHI leather driving gloves with a keyhole back. how cute, I want them…

Finally, and pay close attention, because if not you will freeze your a%$ off, I added my favorite ingredient of all time, gray, cable knit tights. Oh how lovely! These are a season must have!

Our last, and most obvious piece is a sexy trench coat with huge amounts of fur lining the neck. My sort of coat would be something like this one on fredflare… if there will be fur, especially rubbing by neck and face, it will be faux. If you are into the real fur thang, this My Theresa coat is amazing… but I still haven’t decided that I am ok with wearing fur… or spending over a grand on a coat… To each his own, I suppose. Wow, did not mean to sound that bitchy, but it is a loaded topic… so moving onwards.

So, there you have it, my lovelies! Basically, replace your warmer weather things with those things that will keep you warm. If you really wanna go crazy, wear those platforms and pop on some opaque tights. Yes, it’s ok if the seam on the toe is showing, and who cares if they are white.

Most importantly, go crazy, have fun, and don’t squish your fave summer clothes in the closet throughout Fall and Winter! They have feelings too!
